PENANG
INTRODUCTION

The island of Penang which also known as ‘Pearl of the Orient’ lies approximately 112km south of Langkawi. The island was filled with lush tropical vegetation when first discovered by Captain Francis Light in 1786. Specifically, the name of Pulau Pinang (Island of the Betel Nut)  is obtained by the existence of many betel nut palm which is a common sight all over the island.Penang has come a long way from its early beginnings as the first British trading post in the Far East. Georgetown, the capital town of Pulau Pinang is a bustling metropolitan city with a unique blend of East and West. Here, Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang offer all the scenic delights of tropical beach paradise. There are also numerous hotels of international standard fronting the sea along the beaches on its northern coastlines.



1.     BATU FERRINGHI'S SIDEWALK BAZAAR



Ø  Batu Ferringh is well known having a world-class resultsincluding rows of specialty restaurants and shops. Business is often brisk here, and one particular business that's currently thriving and attracting the tourist mass is the sidewalk bazaar that's held every evening.
Ø  In the evening, the sidewalks facing the Batu Ferringhi road become cluttered with makeshift stalls.
Ø  You could see the string of stalls stretch all the way from Shangri-la's Rasa Sayang Hotel to the Casuarina Hotel, offering tourists a variety of cheap merchandise especially of the 'bootleg' sort. The stalls sell a wide assortment of 'Penang' handicrafts, designer apparel, leather bags, watches to CDs, VCDs and computer games with affordable prices.
Ø  The stalls operate from about 6.00pm to 12.00am daily.


2.      KOMTAR (Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak)

Ø  This complex building is actually the major shopping giants in this 65-storey building (above) in Penang Road include Super Komtar Departmental Store and Japanese supermarket Yaohan Departmental Store.
Ø  Ther is many retail shops featuring clothes are also found on the second and third floors at Phase One and Two.
Ø  Komtar is surely the big opportunity for shopper for shopping here since it was once the shopping haven for Penangites as shoppers could purchase almost anything under the sun.

3.      FORT CORNWALLIS



Ø  Fort Cornwallis is located at the center where Captain Francis Light was supposed to have landed in 1786.
Ø  The fort was rebuilt between 1808 and 1810 with convict labour with originally a wooden structure. It was named after Charles Marquis Cornwallis, a distinguished Governor General of India, and designed to protect the harbour from possible French attacks.
Ø  Today, most of the old fort remains and its surrounding becomes into a public park and an open air theatre. But not to worry, this old fort is still guarded by old cannons, which were retrieved by the British from pirates who had captured them from the Johore Sultanate.
Ø  Here, you could see the most famous of the cannons is Seri Rambai, which dates back to 1613.
Ø  Local beliefs have it that childless women can become fertile by placing flowers in the barrel of the cannon and offering special prayers.

4.       P. RAMLEE HOUSE

 

Ø  The house is addressed at No. 4A, Jalan P.Ramlee Pulau Pinang is the birthplace of the late P. Ramlee. The house was built in 1926 by his father and his uncle, Rejab bin Hussein.
Ø  In 1948, the house has been repaired by his uncle during the Japanese Occupation and once again but today the house has been renovated and preserved for the third time by the National Archives of Malaysia. However, the house remains unchanged and still retains its original shape although it is renovated.
Ø  The conservation project on P.Ramlee's House is an extension of the P.Ramlee Memorial in Kuala Lumpur was the government's effort in preserving the memory of P.Ramlee as Malaysia's leading artiste.
Ø  On 22 November 1988, the P.Ramlee Memorial Commitee's meeting decided that his house should be restored and preserved. The house has undergone repairs and conservation, and hopefully it will become an historic place for visitors who wish to remember the Great Artiste himself.
Ø  It stands as a symbol of honour from the government in commemoration of the deeds of a great artiste to the nation. In order to present the likeness of the original setting that prevailed during the period of his youth, the house has been carefully furnished,. Various archival materials and items which relate to his early life are also on display.
Ø  Here, you could find the several sections in the house such as the hall, the bedroom, kitchen and exterior section were used by late P. Ramlee. All the sections, you could experience the history life of P. Ramlee
Ø  Admission to the Memorial is free of charge and the opening hours are as follows:
Monday - Closed except during school holidays
    Tuesday - Thursday: 9.00 am to 6.00 pm
Friday - 9.00 am to 12.00 noon and 3.00 pm to 6.00
    Saturday - Sunday: 9.00 am to 6.00 pm
